Esty Kids Team Interview- Maddy Wear

This quarters feature is something I am REALLY excited to share with you all!! A unique and FUNCTIONAL product , Maddy Wear's  tank style bib is a perfect solution for messy eaters. The "beyond basic" bib is available in a variety of bright fun prints. They are eco-friendly and 100% machine washable!!

Maddy Wear is pleased to announce that they will be included in a sale running from August 22- August 29, 2012. Mark your calendars and scoop some bibs for a great price!

Amanda was also most generous to offer one reader a FREE BIB!! (or you may use your bib a credit toward a gift set). Be sure to read the interview to find out how to enter.

Twitter: @maddywear

Please give us a brief bio, where you are from and how you started crafting?
My name is Amanda Thompson and I am a 35 year old work and home mama with a great husband (Brian) and a 4 year old nugget named Madison (and one more on the way)! I was born and raised in Oahu, Hawaii, where most of my relatives live, but we reside in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (Bothell, Washington). Just to put the record rains a lot more in Hawaii than it does in Seattle, it just is sunny there so people don't notice it as much!

What items do you make?

I make unique tank-style baby and toddler bibs and burp cloths. :-)

When did you first discover your creative talents?

Ha! First off I think I am the least creative person in my family, so I would have never said that I have creative talent. Both my parents are excellent painters and my twin is amazing as well. I can only draw a stick figure at best or a Mr. Potato Head that looks pretty decent.
This design just came out of a need and it forced me to use the sewing machine that I had recieved as a gift years earlier. My daughter had just turned one and I was going crazy over the mess she would make at mealtimes. So I designed a little tank, then I added snaps and velcro and started playing around with it. Now it has morphed into a fully lined bib that is reversible and durable! I love them...can you tell?

What made you open an Etsy Shop?

My friends actually convinced me to sign up for an Etsy shop. I reserved my name in 2009, but I had no idea what Etsy was. I was still in the baby (no pun intended) stages of this business and had an extremely demanding day job and a one year old. Maddy Wear took a back seat for years. I just made bibs locally and sold them to friends and family and just tried to survive working and parenthood. It wasn't until last October that I really said... I need to do this or stop doing it! So I listed items to Etsy on October 26, 2011.

What's your favorite item to make?

I love making all of my items because I know they are going to make life a little easier, if not cleaner. My secret pleasure is fabric shopping and discovering new prints and fabrics that will make my bibs better, more durable and definitely adorable!

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?

Wow, this is a hard question! We are currently in a boutique locally and I love being close to those who buy my bibs, but I also get so excited when I get an order from Australia! Honestly, I want to see Maddy Wear continuously grow. I can't say that I need to have it be in a box store because I believe it will take out a lot of the handmade care that I give each piece I sew. I'd really like to have it stablize and grow and give our daughter Madison the opportunity to help fund her college education someday. I believe it will. She just turned 4, so I definitely have some work to do. :-)

What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?

New fabrics always inspire me! My motivation really come from my customers (new and returning)! I get great print ideas that they are looking for, which puts me on a mission of sorts. Also watching them discover and choose items that they love...and when they get really excited over seeing all of the different styles and options. I have been blessed with the idea and the opportunity to get to do this everyday, but it is really rewarding to have someone love my work. It makes it all worth it.

Any influences or anyone you look up to when it comes to designing?

My husband has a very unique sense of style and I seem to always be successful when I choose the OPPOSITE of what he likes! (Sorry honey).

How do you promote your business?

Most of my promotion has been locally through word of mouth, but I have been working hard to get on great blogs (like this one) and promote my brand through my website, facebook, twitter and pinterest. I find that I can easily spend my entire day on the computer trying to connect with crafters, bloggers, shops etc...and the hours just fly by. I need to schedule myself to make sure I actually get items sewn each week. :-)

Lastly, any words of advice for aspiring designers/artists/crafters?

I know it is always said, but it is so true. If you believe in your product and your brand, you are your biggest fan and NEVER give up on yourself. What do you have to lose right? I have also surrounded myself with very supportive people or identify ones that will pick you up when you need it most. There are many times when we all feel overwhelmed and can't seem to make any headway...that's when I call my "go-to" contacts and explain how I'm feeling and they ALWAYS show me how far I've actually come. I really don't know where I'd be today without them...or where I'll be tomorrow when I need them. :-)

Newborn Ties- Baby Boy Ties For Photo Shoots

I know mom's and photographers are always looking for cute items for newborn boys. Lucky for you, I LOVE making tiny little ties. Our line of baby ties will come pre-tied on a thin neck strap with a Velcro closure for easy placement.

As with all of our products our newborn ties will be made to order in a variety of fabric choices. I will offer many choices in the shop, but am also open to custom orders/ideas. My favorites are polka dots and stripes. The newest trend is chevron and I'm hoping to gather stock of many colors to also add.

Doll Bed Quilt- Newborn Photography Prop

Pretty Baby Accessories has collaborated with Heather Blair Photography and  Briar Rose Crafts & Things to create a prop set to accompany the doll bed trend in newborn photography. This particular Doll Bed Quilt Was an idea brought to me by Heather. We brainstormed with Christina to create something special.

I have been collaborating with Heather Blair Photography since a few months after our opening. Her work is absolutely stunning and it is always a treat to see the squishy newborns modeling our accessories. Through working with Heather, I have made some great connections and have become friends with some amazing boutique owners.

One such owner is Christina, of Briar Rose Crafts & Things. Christina and her husband Dale create crochet and knit hats, cocoons, headbands, blankets, and more. Most of their work is for newborn photographers, but they also create larger sizes to cater directly to their customers growing children. Their work is spectacular and I highly reccomend picking up a prop from them for your next photo shoot.

Now that I have introduced the key players in this collaboration, Let me get to the good part...describing the goodies! This Newborn Photography Prop Set was made to match a particular hat and legwarmer set made by Briar Rose Crafts & Things. The colors are girly, bright, and reminiscent of spring; therefore I chose to work with floral print fabrics.

This particular quilt is referred to as a rag quilt. This is because of the fluffy/ frayed appearance of the seams and outer perimeter. The hand made quilt is a perfect fit for your doll bed prop and is made to have a slight over hang. A standard size doll quilt is 20" X 24", but we will accomodate for some of the smaller or larger beds on the market. (Please always let us know the bed size for an accurate fit). Quilts can be made for girls, boys, neutral, or reversible to include one boy side and one girl side.

Our set will always include a matching fabric banner. The banner will use the same fabric as the quilt and can be made to have scalloped or triangular panels. The length of the garland is 6-7' giving you enough room to position it as you please. As with the rag quilt, our banners can be made for girls, boys, neutral, or reversible to include one boy side and one girl side.

Thank you for taking the time to read about this fantastic collaboration. We look forward to working with these talented ladies again in the future and hope that you will let us know your thoughts and ideas for future projects.

I Grew up with my grandmother in the home who taught me my sewing skills but didnt really take off with that until the past few years. I really love acrylic painting and charcoal drawing but don't have enough room to work large scale like I would prefer:) (I sneak the love of painting into my doll faces so I dont lose touch)

Handmade Plush Dolls

What's your favorite item to make?

My fav item to make is always changing but At the moment I love making dolls:) Each one is unique- with there hand painted features and dress up clothing they are able to be customized which makes them so much fun!

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
In the next 5 years I see my business so busy I can barely keep up but a plan to keep my craft and home life balanced! I see my shop with an even larger variety of goodies for moms and children...and maybe I'll be able to find something to add for daddy's too!

What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?
The love from my fans and customers is what keeps me going! I have a great fan/customer base and they are all the sweetest group of people. I love the challenges they give me, to create what they have envisioned and the joy/enthusiasm when they see the final results. To keep myself motivated I will make sure I save time on the side to create what is in my mind or on my list in between orders. It helps keep me sane and loving what I do!

How do you promote your business?
I promote my business by occasionally doing craft fairs but a lot is by word of mouth and networking with other artist/crafters!

Lastly, any words of advice for aspiring designers/artists/crafters?
It took me 2 years of patience and persistence before I had steady orders. If you want to make it work you have to work at it and get your name out there. It is a daily routine and not instant success. Even when things are slow and you have no work, always be creating and finding ways to get your name out

there and in the end it will pay off!

Esty Kids Team Interview- HingMade

Phew! The holiday rush has finally wound down. That means I am back on my mission to find the best of the best in the world of the Etsy Kids Team. My latest find is the fabulous HingMade, where everything is 100% handmade with love and care.

I had the pleasure of interviewing owner Hing so that I could share her creations with you all. Read the interview, get inspired, and maybe you'll get lucky! There is a giveaway to go along with this article <3

Shop: HingMade (

When did you first discover your creative talents?
I studied art in school and have always had a love for arts and crafts. Seeing something go from concept to design to a product that goes to someone who appreciates my work makes me very happy.

What made you open an Etsy Shop?
In the beginning, I design and create as a hobby. Then, I discovered Etsy and saw so many talented artists. I wanted to join them and get people around the country and the world to enjoy my work.

What items do you make?
I mostly make baby mobiles now. I also make children soft toys, finger puppets, soft books, ornaments. I welcome custom orders!! If there is an idea, I'd love to help you realize it!

What's your favorite item to make?
I like every item I make so it's hard to choose a favorite. I especially like custom orders where customers give me one or two nursery pictures and ask me to design a mobile to match the nursery. I really appreciate the trust they place in me to create unique mementos for their babies. And my customers' feedbacks have been very positive.

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
I'd love to start creating other kinds of toys and ornaments. My current goal is to make a few sales a week. That way, there is enough demand to keep me motivated but also enough time to take care of my family and be thoughtful about my creations. That also allows me time to continue hand-making each piece with details. I insist on sewing each piece - instead of glue - that way, my creations last longer and will bring lots of memories to my customers for years to come.

What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?
I love animals and nature and I like to incorporate those into my creation. I get motivated by my customers' kind feedbacks and appreciation pictures.

How do you promote your business?
I spend most of my time creating and wish I could promote my work better. I use Facebook, Twitter, and Etsy Search Ads for advertising.

Lastly, any words of advice for aspiring designers/artists/crafters?
Spend time creating but remember to spend time spreading the word about your work as well. Knowing that people see and appreciate your work keeps you motivated to create even more things.

Hingmade was generous enough to offer a set of Easter Felt Finger Puppets to one lucky reader. Enter the giveaway below Good Luck!!! <3 <3

Girls Punk Accessories

As I continue to add to accessories to the Etsy shop, I notice that some items can be grouped into collections. The first set I'd like to feature is our Girl's Punk Rock Collection.

The Punk Boutique Hair Bow is perfect for your bow lover. The Skull center piece comes in Black/White or Pink/White.

The "Black Beauty" is a black rose headband with a gorgeous rhinestone button. It can be made as a clip if you don't like headbands. This is a favorite among our older teens and adults!

We also have a punk rock style rosette headband. The Hot Pink and Zebra Rosette Headband. This one is a perfect photo prop or beautiful everyday accessory for the sassy one in the house.

We hope to add more accessories o this line in the near future as it holds a special place in this rocker heart! \m/
